The Magical Beauty of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

When you think about the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, most people automatically think about white sand beaches and the chilled-out surfer vibe. Yes, there’s plenty of that! however, if you venture beyond the beaches and head in land, you’ll find something rather special.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is not to be missed. Not only is it shrouded in history and Aboriginal culture, but it’s also a truly breath-taking destination, one which will certainly fill up your camera’s memory space! Of course, that famous Sunshine Coast weather doesn’t hurt either, as you’ll be catching plenty of warm sun, vitamin D, and probably an envious tan too. What could be better?

The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s most famous spots, thanks to high profile Sunshine Coast attractions, such as Australia Zoo, the Ginger Factory, Flaxton Gardens high-tea, Pioneer Coffee, however there is much more to see beyond the hotspots. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is easy to get to from the top towns on the Sunshine Coast map, such as Noosa, Caloundra, Mooloolaba, and Maroochydore. That really gives you no excuse not to visit!

What is so Special About the Sunshine Coast Hinterland?

The reason the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is so special is down to many reasons, but the history and culture really sets it apart. You’ll find a traditional, slower pace of life here, compared to the main towns we just mentioned. That means you can enjoy nature at its very best, have your breath taken away by the most amazing views you’ll ever set eyes on, learn about mysteries and tales from Aboriginal culture, head to a relaxing retreat and let all your cares drift away, and basically allow Mother Nature to take care of you for the time you’re visiting. Of course, there’s plentiful gastronomy to enjoy too, with locally grown fare and fine dining in abundance!

The area is made up of a range of towns which are all easily connected, with mountains, rainforests, forests, woods, and valleys spanning across the entire region. Beerwah, Glass House Country, Landsborough, Kenilworth, Maleny, Mooloolah Valley, and Palmwoods are some of the most notable towns within the region, with several more to check out besides.

You’ll meet locals who will happily chat away to you about their local lives, you’ll get to slow right down and appreciate the sights before you, and basically, you probably won’t want to leave! Those Sunshine Coast beaches might be jaw-droppingly inviting, but the Hinterland certainly rivals the surf!

Things to See and Do in The Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Whatever you want to do in the Hinterland, you can find it, as long as it has that relaxed country vibe around it! You won’t find major nightlife and huge shopping malls, and for that, you need to stick to the major resort towns on the coast; here it’s more about authenticity, a slower pace, and mother nature in control.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t any major attractions, far from it! Australia Zoo is located here, and it doesn’t get much bigger than that! You can also take the kids to Aussie World, for a spot of theme park fun, or the very popular Ginger Factory. If it’s shopping you’re after, then head to Montville, where you’ll find upmarket boutiques and galleries to check out, however, there are souvenir shops and small markets in most of the towns in the region. Farmer’s markets are big here, and you’ll be able to pick up some locally grown goods to sample back at your Sunshine Coast accommodation!

One thing which is very prominent is nature is lots of walking! Put on some comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, take some water and get out into nature! You’ll find trails for all abilities, including the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, which covers a huge 58km and takes you around some of the main sights, such as Maleny, Konadalilla National Park and Mapleton Falls National Park – yes, the scenery is as amazing as it sounds! The Kondalilla National Park is actually the traditional land of the Aboriginal Gubbi Gubbi Tribe, and you can learn all about the history, culture, and traditions.

For calmer walks, Palmwoods and Woombye have some pretty wooded areas, and for those who want to test their physical strength, head to Mt Tibrogargan Summit Climb! The Glass House Mountains are one of the most famous parts of the region, and again, there are many walking spots here, as well as lookout points which will show you stunning views and amazing sunsets. There is plenty of Aboriginal history to explore here too, and it’s worth noting that these mountains were formed around 31 million years ago! Thanks to a massive volcano eruption, we now have this stunningly beautiful area to explore.

We’ve not finished with the outdoor adventures yet! Rainforests must be on your to-do list, and for that, you should head to Mary Cairncross Scenic Rainforest Reserve. There is also plenty of outdoor adventure to be had in the Conondale Ranges further west.

Around these regions, you’ll find many eco-resorts, which are opening up quite a lot lately. This is down to the surge in planetary responsibility, but nature here really makes it a great spot to locate such a resort! The Kondalilla Eco Resort is one of the most popular, and certainly one of the most chilled out. It goes without saying that these natural retreats are ideal for romance too!

The hipster vibe is alive and well in the country town of Maleny, which is one of the most popular areas within the Hinterland region. Here you’ll find lots of alternative therapies, healing resorts, and you’ll also get to check out many organic cafes, and art galleries with an alternative vibe.
